Here’s a thought next time you pass through Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport: there is an army of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure passengers have as safe and seamless travel experience as possible!
Last year, 61.6 million passengers passed through the airport, so as you can imagine, minimising disruption and delays for passengers is a never-ending challenge. For the past 30 years, Chisholm & Winch has had a dedicated team based at Heathrow, delivering many refurbishment, upgrade and construction projects across the airport, both airside and landside.
We are currently working with one of Heathrow’s delivery integrators, Mace, on several projects as part of Heathrow’s latest infrastructure investment programme. These include works to upgrade the airport’s security equipment technology so it complies with new regulations, enhances passenger safety and reduces queuing times. Working at night to minimise operational disruption, we have also conducted surveys at Terminals 3 and 5 for other trades, before main works commence.
A major project we are currently working on, which runs until 2025, is the refurbishment of the outdated cargo tunnel connecting Terminal 3 to Terminal 4. After cleaning the tunnel last year, we are now upgrading the plant rooms and plenum ceiling within the tunnel and installing new passive fire protection (PFP) lining.
Elsewhere, we are involved in the building of a contingency air traffic control tower which entails an extensive building works package ranging from blockwork walls and concrete plinths to screed and painting.
We are also replacing the electrical boards for backup power at Terminals 3 and 4.
As Heathrow is a live operational environment, much of our work takes place at night to fit around the busy airport facility. With an extensive scope of work across multiple projects, our team is skilled at carpentry, fixing, diamond drilling, fire-stopping, cladding installation, general building works, working at height and in confined spaces.
As a trusted second tier supplier to Heathrow’s delivery partners and with our three decades of experience in this sector, we understand that flexibility and agility are pivotal to completing projects successfully. Along with our technical expertise, meticulous planning and rigorous commitment to safety and security, we will continue to guarantee the execution of these and all airport projects to ensure a first-class experience for everyone.
