At Chisholm & Winch, we bring more than years 30 years of expertise in airport refurbishment projects to transform, upgrade, and maintain mission-critical facilities.

We have become a trusted second tier supplier to delivery partners such as Balfour Beatty, Mace and Morgan Sindall. From fire safety system maintenance to major airside and landside upgrades, we deliver every type of project with precision and efficiency.

Minimising Disruption and Downtime

After 30-years working in airport environments, we can look back on some of the essential works we have delivered on time, within budget and most importantly, safely, within security-focused environments…

Like the project we are working on currently: a two-year, £10m contract with Heathrow Airport and Heathrow’s principal contractor, Mace, to deliver a schedule of renewal works within the airport’s one-kilometre-long cargo tunnel. The scope of works includes breakout and removal of concrete walkways and handrails, removal of the plenum ceiling, concrete repairs and installation of a new passive fire protection (PFP) lining within the tunnel. We are also providing ongoing environmental cleaning and maintenance of the cargo tunnel, which runs underground within the London Borough of Hillingdon to the edge of the airport.

We have a dedicated team at Heathrow comprised of hard working, trained professionals who work around the clock to undertake the necessary works, often scheduled within the airport’s non-operation windows, such as between the last flight in the evening and the first flight of the following day.

For the works within the Heathrow cargo tunnel, our 20-strong team fit around the busy schedule of the UK’s only hub airport, including night working as the tunnel is in constant use during the day.

Our work at Heathrow T3 to deliver the infrastructure works required to convert gates 16-19, 21, 35-36, 40 and 42 to self-boarding gates in 2022 was again, another highlight. Working in partnership with Mace, the eight-month programme involved working in the live airport terminal to enable faster boarding thanks to electronic self-boarding equipment. Our remit included joinery, flooring, ceilings, redecoration and installation of specialist hoarding systems.

We’ve also delivered extensive works at T4; surveying and replacing all fire alarm points and speakers, ensuring all alarms and fire safety apparatus are well-maintained and fit for purpose. The project involved fixing, firestopping, joinery and dry lining, working across all landside and airside areas at the airport during the night, and ensuring the terminal building could operate as usual the following day.

Smart Pre-Project Planning

After three decades of airport environment working, we’ve learnt a thing or two about successful collaboration with our clients, which includes precise planning. Not only is our client our priority, but the needs and safety of the millions of passengers each day is key, so we meticulously plan each project phase to allow airport facilities to remain fully operational.

For example, when we carry out upgrades of toilet areas, we always ensure that the project is phased to allow facilities to remain in use for passengers, with appropriate segregation of the work area if we are on site during operational hours.

We also set up project-specific messaging groups to ensure that information sharing is smooth and timely, limiting any potential errors or unnecessary downtime.

Safety and Security at the Core

We understand more than most the critical importance of safety and security in every aspect of our work. We adhere to stringent safety standards and ensure all equipment and materials used meet the highest of industry certification.

We continually invest in our team’s upskilling and training, which in-turn provides a highly skilled offering. For example, our staff undergo hazardous environment training with specialist face-fitted masks and PPE to protect the team from dust during refurbishment works, along with strict working at height and confined space training and protocols. We also recently achieved FIRAS Certification to adhere to strict airport regulations.

Our 30-year Legacy

We are proud to be involved in such a complex yet rewarding sector when it comes to fit-out, refurbishment and maintenance work.

Our continued work throughout Heathrow, and other UK airports, means we are a perfect partnership for clients working on projects in this sector.  We will continue to combine technical expertise, meticulous planning and unwavering commitment to safety and security, to ensure all airport projects are carried out seamlessly.
